10pm-6pm

valerie and i sat in boxes. 4x4 feet. we surveyed one another for 20 hours. i saw into her box through the mirror on the wall and she saw me the same way. sunglasses were worn to eliminate eye contact. we jotted down whatever we felt was of interest that the other person did, and after each hour or so would set the piece of paper outside our box and start a new one. there was no communication between us or to the audience. we did get three food breaks and bathroom breaks, thank goodness! we chose to do this for our first project of the semester which was to chose from a list of topics that related to issues within society (consumerism, surveillance, technology, etc.) obviously we chose surveillance. the idea came about from my reading of Foucault's essay on Panopticism and researching Jonathan Bentham's architectural design of the panopticon.
